Keeping optimistic!

Keeping optimistic!

When I look at the world today, it gets particularly hard to retain my usual sense of happy go lucky optimism. Whether its the dragging on of the conflict in Libya, the attempts to make safe the Fukushima reactor, or corruption in the world’s football governing body FIFA, it continually feels that things are going pretty badly wherever you turn.
The one real piece of good news in the news today seems to be the arrest and extradition of former Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladic, but I don’t know if I can really call it cause for optimism. After all, the arrest of a criminal is good news only in terms of the potential of justice for the victims of the crime. But it’s a hell of a lot better than no good news at all. As the long struggle for justice after the Balkan wars of the 1990s drags on, it’s good news to read that another perpetrator of the worst atrocities may now face some kind of justice.
But I’d like to think that one reason why the news sometimes feels so lacking in optimistic stories is that good things in the world still seem normal, commonplace, so they won’t necessarily be reported unless there are particularly unusual circumstances in play. A Hotel Looe might find itself being cleaned for free by young people. That’s not news. Nor is the sun rising, or being loaned a few quid by a friend when you’re in a spot of money bother. But it’s those things that make the world a better, brighter and more optimistic place.
